The Launching Of TERI-SDC Biomass Gasifier Pilot Project in Ethiopia
On June 30th, 2015 TERI reached on an agreement with AFEsol Technology Plc to establish a biomass gasifier pilot project in Ethiopia. AFesol is a medium scale metal fabrication and machine innovation organization established in 2006. In parallel with the fabrication activities, AFEsol conducts various R&D activities on the areas of renewable energy use e.g Water to gas (H2 fuel as a source of energy) and wood to gas (biomass gasifier).
TERIs' Biomass gasifier experts have visited various metal fabrications in Addis Ababa Ethiopia, From June 25th to 30th, 2015. Afesol is chosen to be potential partner for its strong R&D base, prior research experience with the gasifier technology and strong manufacturing skill. Eng. Teshome, managing director of Afesol, said that there are about 65 thousand textile waving units in Addis Ababa and over 2 million textile waving units all over the country. He added that, the textile bleaching and drying sector have a big market all over the country and biomass is the main sources of thermal energy. And hence biomass gasifier technology can be a good solution for efficient use of biomass in the sector.
Mr Sunil, Senior Biomass gasifier expert from TERI presented on the gasifier technology growth patterns across various industrial clusters in India. He said that the basic aim of the TERI-SDC Biomass pilot project is to promote energy efficiency and fossil fuel replacement in the SMEs sector of Ethiopia. Currently the project objective is to launch a demonstrational pilot project on selected SMEs sectors of Ethiopia. On a long term the project aims to see possibility of scaling up the biomass gratifier technology in Ethiopia and anchor the technology locally.
